Your Role as an Afterschool Teacher

As an Afterschool Teacher, you’ll help lead a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment for school-age children during out-of-school hours. You’ll support the planning and facilitation of hands-on activities, games, and group projects that promote creativity, teamwork, and social development. You’ll also help manage daily routines, build positive relationships, and ensure every child feels welcomed and supported.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support daily program routines including creative activities, homework assistance, snack, and outdoor play
  • Assist with planning and leading engaging, age-appropriate activities based on children’s interests and developmental needs
  • Supervise and actively participate with children during activities, games, and free play
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized program environment aligned with state licensing regulations
  • Foster independence, teamwork, and positive peer interactions using positive guidance strategies
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to create a welcoming, enriching afterschool environment


Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children in afterschool programs, summer camps, child care, recreation, or youth development (preferred)
  • Understanding of child development principles and developmentally appropriate practices (DAP)
  • Friendly, patient, and enthusiastic about working with young children
  • Strong communication skills and a team-oriented mindset
  • Ability to multitask, follow program structure, and adapt to children’s needs
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Coursework or credentials in education, child development, or related field (preferred but not required)
