About Justice Defenders
Justice Defenders trains incarcerated people and prison staff side by side as paralegals and lawyers to serve those denied justice.
Since 2018, we’ve provided free legal advice to 170,000 people in prison without access to justice, securing the release of 69,000 people and reuniting them with their families and communities.
Right now, more than three million people in prison worldwide have not been convicted of a crime.
Without access to justice, people are unlawfully detained, denied fair hearings, and left without protection under the law.
The good news: closing the global justice gap is possible.
We do this in three ways:
Education
We train paralegals and deliver law degrees with the University of London, strengthening legal understanding in prison communities.
Practice
We provide legal advice, prepare cases, and pursue public interest litigation to make fair hearings possible.
Convening
We bring together people in prison, prison staff, legal professionals, and donors to reimagine justice from the inside out.
