About New-Caledonia Environment Observatory (OEIL)

The Observatory for the Environment in New Caledonia (OEIL) was established to address the growing concerns about the impact of human, industrial, and mining activities on our environment. Our mission: to provide the necessary insights for decision-makers to take informed actions for preserving environmental quality. We focus on three core activities: Monitor > Scientifically analyze and interpret data to track environmental conditions and trends. Inform > Regularly communicate information on the state of the environment, the pressures it faces, and the responses made, to public authorities, decision-makers, and the general public. Optimize > Develop environmental monitoring tools in collaboration with scientists and managers: indicators, variables, descriptors, and key figures. OEIL is a non-profit organization under the 1901 French law, with 25 member organizations in 2021, organized into six groups: institutions, municipalities, local community representatives, environmental protection associations, the private sector (industry and mining), and consumer and economic operators' groups (excluding industry and mining).
