Overview

About Ohio University Patton College of Education

At The Patton College, we prepare educators, practitioners, and human service professionals to be leaders. The Patton College has more than 100 faculty members serving more than 2,100 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. Many of our degrees and certificates are offered online as well as in traditional classroom settings on the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio.

Housed in Patton Hall (formerly McCracken Hall), we have a long and proud history of preparing educators and practitioners to be leaders.

In 1886, we became the first public teacher preparation program in Ohio. The state’s first kindergarten opened on our campus in 1907, and in 1948, Dr. George Hill organized the Department of Guidance, Counseling and Student Personnel. In 1997, the Department of Educational Studies was founded, expanding the College’s departments to three.

On July 1, 2010, The Patton College became the home of several excellent programs previously housed in the College of Health and Human Services, creating two new departments. Today, the College comprises four departments: Counseling and Higher Education; Educational Studies; Recreation, Sport Pedagogy and Consumer Sciences; and Teacher Education.

Our faculty’s expertise in research, teaching, and outreach extends internationally to four continents. We have distinguished ourselves by establishing partnerships to address social, economic, and educational issues affecting communities worldwide and impacting students’ ability to learn in our public schools.

While we strive to maintain a close connection with the community and region, the College’s educational excellence reaches across the world to such places as Honduras, Ghana, Kenya and the United Arab Emirates. We established an Instructional Technology program at the University of Jordan in Amman and Saudi Arabia’s Alfaisal International Academy that mirrors the one our College offers.
