Overview
About OpenPrinting
OpenPrinting is maintaining CUPS and related software of the free software/open-source printing stack used by Linux, Unix, and similar POSIX-style operating systems.
OpenPrinting
- works on the development of new printing architectures, technologies, printing infrastructure, and interface standards for Linux and UNIX-style operating systems.
- collaborates with IEEE-ISTO Printer Working Group (PWG) on IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) support and integration.
- is working with the SANE (scanner support) project to make driverless scanning a reality.
- maintains cups-filters which allows CUPS to be used on any Unix-based (non-macOS) system.
- provides look-up lists, one for driverless printers and another for free software driver support of legacy printers.
- supports desktop environment (GNOME, KDE, ...) and application projects to integrate printing support with a smooth user experience.
- takes care of integrating the printing infrastructure with all types of operating systems (classic distro, immutable distro, …) and software distribution technologies (Snap, Docker, …).
- supports printer manufacturers on developing open-source drivers
