Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls - SA

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) strives for a holistic view of education by defining curriculum as the total learning experience, planned and unplanned, provided for the students. The curriculum includes the academic programme, the co-curriculum, sports and recreational activities, methods employed in the classroom and residences, and those features which determine the Academy's ethos.

OWLAG is also a trauma-informed institution. The primary goal of trauma-informed learning, teaching and care is to ensure that all services, interventions, and organisational culture and practices are aligned with understanding the impact of trauma across all areas of functioning. The trauma-informed approach supports recovery and aligns organisational culture so that all areas of the organisation respond "to the effects of trauma at all levels" as opposed to offering interventions or holding practices that are re-traumatising.

Throughout their years at the Academy, students learn to embody the spirit of Ubuntu and are able to harness their leadership skills to serve and inspire those around them. Most importantly, we strive to raise future leaders who are able to navigate a variety of social and cultural contexts and who will remain committed to the development of South Africa, the African continent, and the entire globe. The Academy raises future leaders by putting the child at the centre. In this regard, every facet of the Academy aims at ensuring that the girls become the best they can be.
