About Orangutan Veterinary Aid (OVAID)
Orangutan Veterinary Aid (OVAID) is a UK charity that supports vets working on the front line of orangutan rescue, whether this is from human/orangutan conflict or the illegal wildlife trade. These vet teams often work in difficult, demanding and dangerous conditions with minimal equipment.
Having volunteered for several years in orangutan rehabilitation centres across Borneo & Sumatra, the need to provide vital veterinary equipment, medicines and specialist training to aid vets working to save the critically endangered orangutan was recognised. Dr Nigel Hicks & Sara Fell Hicks co founded OVAID (a voluntary run grassroots charity) in 2014 to fulfil these needs.
OVAID provides on the ground specialist training to orangutan NGO’s vet teams and also runs a scholarship for Indonesian vets working in orangutan conservation to gain specialist veterinary training in the U.K.
OVAID dedicate their time, veterinary experience and knowledge to both practically help the vet teams on the ground in Indonesia and to spread the word on issues of orangutan veterinary welfare and conservation of their precious habitat through public and educational speaking.
In 2018 OVAID won the prestigious IFAW Animal Action International Conservation Award.
