About Alberta First Responders Association (AFRA)

Preventing Psychological Injury Before Crisis for Alberta's 50,000+ First Responders

We train firefighters to enter burning buildings. Paramedics to stabilize trauma. Police to de-escalate conflict. Dispatchers to guide people through their worst moments. But who trains them to handle the emergencies happening inside their own heads?

That's where AFRA comes in.

The Alberta First Responders Association launched February 28, 2023, as a private Facebook peer support group. Within 2 years, we've grown to 5000+ members—proving the desperate need for mental health support that actually understands the job.

Today, we're Alberta's leading nonprofit driving proactive mental health and suicide prevention for first responders across all disciplines.

The Reality:

792 psychological injury claims filed in Alberta in 2024. 227 denied. First responders are 2-3x more likely to experience PTSD than the general population. Yet stigma, limited access, and fear of career impact keep many from seeking help.

Our Approach:

Early intervention stops crises before they start. Through peer support networks, mental health education, policy advocacy, and trauma-informed partnerships, we're changing the culture around first responder mental health.
Because the people who save lives deserve to have theirs saved too.

Business Partnership Opportunities:

CSR Leadership – Our 2026 Gala (March 7, Wyndham Edmonton) connects 500+ decision-makers and public safety leaders.
Network Access – Build relationships with Alberta's first responder community
Brand Impact – Co-branded visibility supporting workforce mental health
resilience.

We're not just raising awareness. We're building infrastructure for long-term change.

Follow us for frontline stories, mental health strategies, and partnership opportunities.
