About Institute of Languages for Specific Purposes, Semmelweis University

The Institute of Languages for Specific Purposes, Semmelweis University focuses on interprofessional research and innovation in medical communication, instruction and examination of languages for specific purposes, training medical interpreters and translators as well as scientific editors, supervising theses, and organizing the annual Semmelweis Medical Linguistics Conference fostering academic discussions in healthcare communication.

In cooperation with medical experts, research includes empirical studies on health communication, patient-centered medical communication, medical translation and interpreting, and terminology development.

As an examination center, we provide OET, Profex, telc, and DFP exams in English, German and French healthcare, and general language domains. We also offer an online Scientific Editor Training program in English and postgraduate training for medical translators and interpreters (Hungarian-English and Hungarian-German), with a focus on computer-assisted translation and project-based practices.

Our professional language courses emphasize real-life healthcare scenarios, practice-oriented communication, and documentation skills, with teaching assistants often playing the role of simulated patients to enhance practical learning. In 2021, the Department of LSP received the European Language Label for its innovative teaching methods.
