About Soft Fruit Breeding James Hutton Institute Scientific Services
James Hutton Institute Scientific Services manages soft fruit breeding programmes designed to meet the needs of individual customers, strategic partners, and larger consortia.
• We have dedicated breeders for Rubus (raspberries, blackberries), Ribes (currants, gooseberries), and Vaccinium (blueberries), ensuring that each programme’s objectives align with customer requirements, consumer trends, and modern production systems.
• Our breeders draw on the Institute’s cutting-edge science strengths in genetics, genomics, and phenotyping, supported by advanced high-health facilities, pathogen testing capabilities, and innovative Agri-tech solutions.
• We integrate marker development, validation, and screening through our Molecular Diagnostics Unit to accelerate breeding progress and deliver robust outcomes.
• Once promising selections are identified, we can guide the commercialisation process, including Plant Breeders’ Rights applications and upkeep as well as royalty collections.
By combining specialist knowledge with world-class research infrastructure, we deliver breeding programmes that not only meet immediate customer needs but also anticipate future challenges in soft fruit production.
