About Stop Financing Factory Farming
What is the Stop Financing Factory Farming campaign?
We are a diverse global coalition working to shift public development finance away from industrial animal agriculture, to sustainable and equitable food production. Our Steering Committee is made up of 7 civil society organisations, and we have over 30 campaign members internationally. Our Steering Committee members are: Bank Information Center, Friends of the Earth US, Feedback Global, Global Forest Coalition, International Accountability Project, Sinergia Animal and World Animal Protection.
Why does this coalition exist?
Industrial livestock operations are a leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, biodiversity loss, antibiotic resistance, animal suffering, serious workplace injury, pollution and water depletion, often disproportionately impacting women, indigenous peoples and low-income communities of color. Despite this, across contexts as diverse as India, Brazil, Ecuador, Zambia, Uganda and Vietnam, Public Development Banks (PDBs) are financing giant and emerging animal agriculture companies like Marfrig, Pronaca and Zambeef - with the goals of increasing productivity, food security, jobs, and the availability of high quality nutritious food. In the process, the Development Banks take insufficient account of the risks and impacts of intensive and industrial production, often failing to meaningfully evaluate environmental and social risks or consult local communities who will be affected. Moreover, evidence has repeatedly shown that the promises and goals of developing industrial animal agriculture fail to materialise for many of the constituencies they are claimed to benefit - while causing severe and unmitigated social and ecological harms.
