About Triple P Canada
Triple P Canada was created in 2011 to disseminate The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, train practitioners and support program implementation of various Triple P interventions.
Through Triple P, parents and carers are offered simple and practical evidence-based strategies to help create safe and supportive family relationships, handle ups and downs, guide behaviour and teach new skills, and encourage parental capacity and confidence.
We know that trauma such as child maltreatment and abuse is linked to poor physical and mental health over a lifetime and that too many Canadian children are growing up in dysfunctional and even violent homes. (www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/85-002-x/2018001/article/54893-eng.htm)
However research also shows that it can be difficult and even counterproductive to only offer support to families who are perceived as “needing help”.
A population health approach (community delivered services as well as options for 24/7 online interventions) allows parents to choose the right amount of support, which is more effective and more cost-efficient.
Promoting positive family environments brings widespread social and economic benefits, improving school readiness and life outcomes.
The Triple P System is a flexible suite of various programs that enhance parents’ knowledge and skills to help them:
- provide optimal environments for children (nurturing, engaging, low conflict);
- promote children's social, emotional, and cognitive development,
- encourage pro-social behaviour and emotional self-regulation through positive parenting.
Many programs and resources are available in French; quite a number of Indigenous Canadian family support and health agencies use the program, and decades of research in different countries around the world has found Triple P to be culturally appropriate and sensitive.
Canada has also been a key site in the research and development of the new PECE program, (The Positive Early Childhood Education Program).
