About True North Society

Over 30 years ago, a grassroots initiative was born from a group of Strathmore neighbours with a shared vision: to interrupt the cycle of abuse to create a safe environment for all. What began as the Wheatland Community Crisis Society has since grown into True North: a recognized leader in relationship violence prevention and shelter, and Wheatland pioneer in affordable housing for survivors of relationship violence.

Since our establishment, we have lived by the belief that all individuals deserve to live violence-free. We were the first emergency shelter in Canada to open our doors to men and gender-diverse survivors. In 2017, True North was awarded the provincial Alberta Inspiration Award in recognition of our inclusive practices. In 2022, we were awarded Nonprofit of the Year, and in 2024, we were recognized as an Outstanding Local Organization by the Purple Ribbon Awards. But the real reward comes from those we serve who have shared, “I was finally seen, and finally safe.”

Today, True North is working harder than ever to create a full continuum of care:
👉Prevention through education and outreach that stops violence before it begins.
👉Intervention through crisis response, outreach, and inclusive emergency shelter.
👉Stability through affordable housing and wraparound supports that help families to rebuild.

Every program is built on lived experience, trauma-informed care, and community connection. Survivors tell us that safety is more than a roof: it is a chance to heal, raise their children in peace, and rebuild a future without fear.

As Strathmore’s only relationship violence support agency, we’ve become a fundamental worker in the fight to end violence, a mentor to others, a partner to our Indigenous neighbours, and a proven model of what’s possible when compassion meets innovation.

Our mission is simple: Together we will continue to walk the path with those in crisis: honoring the past, providing support in the present, and awakening hope for the future
