About Article 109

When the UN Charter was signed in 1945, it included a promise: that within 10 years, the rules of the game would be reviewed. This built-in mechanism for review, Article 109 of the UN Charter, has never been used.

As the world hurtles from crisis to crisis and multilateralism sinks into a deep recession, now is the time to deliver on this promise: it is time to collectively create a stronger, more equitable international system that is fit-for-purpose in this new era. It is time to update the rules of the game.

Originally launched by two dozen civil society organisations in Kenya as the UN Charter Reform Coalition, the Article 109 Coalition now brings together former Ambassadors, government officials and senior UN officials with academics, seasoned campaigners, non-profit executives, and civil society organisations from around the world.

We mobilise the 193 Member States of the UN to invoke Article 109 by creating understanding and cross-regional coalitions among Member States; we build grassroots support by raising awareness; and we mainstream the idea of Charter renewal within the discourse on UN reform.
