Overview
About UniProt
Our mission at UniProt is to provide the scientific community with a comprehensive, high-quality and freely accessible resource of protein sequence and functional information. This includes the amino acid sequence of reference proteins and of related isoforms, annotated with post-translational modifications, mutations and functional/disease variants. Physiological functional information, protein structures, protein interaction/complex information and much more is added to relevant entries. UniProt is populated by both expertly curated experimental data which is then computationally transferred to homologous entries and imported data from hundreds of cross-referenced databases.
UniProt is a collaboration between the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and the Protein Information Resource (PIR). Across the three institutes more than 100 people are involved in database curation, user support, software and website development.
UniProt resources are freely available online at UniProt.org
Programmatic access is available via our APIs at www.uniprot.org/help/programmatic_access
