Overview

About Utilium

Utilium develops sustainable, biofilm-targeting technologies upcycled from seafood waste.

Biofilms are communities of bacteria surrounded by an almost impenetrable surface. This protective layer makes them extremely difficult to remove, allowing bacteria to persist in healthcare, marine, and industrial systems. Biofilms drive antibiotic resistance, marine biofouling, and equipment contamination — costing billions globally every year.

Our approach is different. Instead of relying on brute-force antimicrobials or toxic coatings, we are exploring bio-inspired strategies. Early results suggest that compounds found in discarded shells can trigger the formation of biofilms, causing them to open and expose the bacteria inside, thereby creating a natural window of vulnerability.

Vision Statement
Utilium is transforming seafood waste into breakthrough solutions that open biofilms - bacterial communities protected by an impenetrable layer that makes them hard to shift. By unlocking this barrier, we aim to develop new approaches to addressing biofilm issues across healthcare and industry.
