About Writers' Room of Boston

The Writers’ Room of Boston is a welcoming and supportive community, workspace and virtual presence for writers in all genres.
For the past three decades, The Writers’ Room of Boston, one of the only urban writers’ colonies in New England and one of the first in the nation, has supported the creation of written work by providing Boston-area writers with an invaluable resource: space.
Situated in downtown Boston, the Room is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week (unlike libraries and cafés) with ten desks, a small kitchen, private bathroom, and conference room to assist writers at all stages of their careers. Some writers use the Room during business hours; others come to write before or after their jobs and/or on weekends. No reservations are required.
Today the Room’s growth has come from both established and newer writers who are developing their craft. More than half of the membership consists of emerging writers—who have not yet published a great deal but who are working on well-thought-out projects and who have demonstrated their ability and seriousness of purpose to our members, who vet every application for membership.
The Writers’ Room of Boston reaches out to under-served populations in the Boston area to find applicants for fellowships. These fellowships grant free membership for one year to each of five based on submission of written material. This initiative has been funded in the past by grants from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, by the National Endowment for the Arts and by individual contributions from members and supporters of the Writers’ Room of Boston.
