About YWCA St. John's

YWCA St. John’s envisons a feminist future, where communities are empowered and liberated from systemic oppression.

Our mission is to advance gender equity through advocacy and justice-doing programs and services.

Our values are:

1. We advocate for equity and justice: Prioritizing equity and anti-oppression in our work, we resist systems of oppression including patriarchy, racism, colonialism, classism, ableism, ageism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and transphobia. People experience barriers differently and we seek to dismantle imbalanced systems.

2. We work together towards gender equity: Collaboration makes all we do possible. Working in partnerships informs our services by focusing on the needs of diverse communities. Inclusive relationship-building extends to how we secure resources, work cross-culturally, and honour peoples’ lived and living experiences.

3. We respect that people define their own lives: Being people-centred means we provide low barrier access to diverse programming. We meet folks where they are and stay with them as they strive to achieve their goals. Our responses are individualized, flexible and non-judgemental. We stay accountable in all that we do, acknowledging that individual struggles reflect larger systems-level inequities.
