Following the changes to the NDIS system proposed by the federal government, the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance, of which BEING is a founding member, has urged major changes to the Bill. The concern is that the Bill's motivation to reduce costs risks undermining the original rights-based model.
The Alliance fears the reforms could increase isolation, crisis presentations and pressure on carers and hospitals if safeguards are not strengthened.
Key recommendations include:
• delaying the Bill for genuine co-design with people with psychosocial disability
• protecting social and community participation supports
• removing mandatory “appropriate treatment” requirements
• limiting automated decision-making
• ensuring no one loses support until alternative services are fully funded and accessible.
