Shopify just proved Agentic Commerce is no longer a concept

Most people in ecommerce already see the direction:

AI is reshaping discovery, and more purchase journeys are starting in chat.

What Shopify showed this week is that the model is already moving beyond discovery.

⚡ Shopify merchants can now surface products in ChatGPT.

Users discover products across the Shopify ecosystem through Shopify Catalog, then complete purchases via an in-app browser.

Orders flow back into Shopify admin with ChatGPT referral attribution, while merchants remain the merchant of record.

🛒 The experience is not generic AI shopping.

Merchant customizations carry over across the flow, including brand experience, pricing logic, payment methods, and checkout customizations.

On desktop, ChatGPT links directly to the merchant’s store in a separate browser tab.

🌐 Shopify also opened its Agentic plan to brands not using Shopify as their ecommerce platform.

That means they can still add products to Shopify Catalog and sell across AI channels like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Shop.

This is the real signal: agentic commerce is no longer just an emerging idea.

Shopify is already turning it into live commerce infrastructure.
