Celebrating Michigan's Largest Private Investment: AI Data Center in Saline Township
Some of the biggest tech executives in the U.S. gathered in a field south of Ann Arbor on Monday to celebrate what they’re billing as the state’s largest private investment in history.
Artificial intelligence pioneer and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, along with top executives of prominent tech developer Oracle, the world’s largest investment firm Blackstone, real estate developer Related Companies and Detroit-based Walbridge touted the potential of the controversial AI data center in rural Saline Township.
While the media event had elements of glad-handing between the West Coast tech elite and Michigan’s post-industrial change agents, the speakers took to optimism around the state’s role.
With anti-data center pushback swelling among residents in two dozen Michigan communities, the group of executives and officials coalesced on the massive Oracle/OpenAI data center to sing its potential.
Altman, whose company created ChatGPT, called the Saline Township development a “huge bet” that could serve as the model of future development in the AI age.
