Waymo's Fully Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service Coming to Detroit Soon

Fully autonomous ride-hailing is coming to Detroit later this year when Waymo launches its driverless taxi service.

Michigan’s bar for entry is low: insurance coverage, a million test miles and little else.

Waymo has been testing in Detroit since November with manual drivers, and is eyeing a fully driverless launch later this year. Representatives for Waymo did not provide a specific timeline for the company’s launch.

The launch will be the first driverless vehicle service of its kind offered in Detroit — and in Michigan — on such a broad scale.

Michigan has one of the most permissive autonomous vehicle frameworks in the country, which paves the way for Waymo to deploy in the city with little oversight. Detroit itself has no rules or regulations for autonomous vehicle companies to follow.
