MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz Departs for Clemson University Leadership Role
Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz is leaving the East Lansing-based university to lead Clemson University in South Carolina.
Clemson’s board of trustees made their choice official the morning of May 27.
Guskiewicz’s departure comes a little over two years after he took over MSU’s presidency. He joined MSU after serving as chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The final weeks of Guskiewicz’s presidency were marked by renewed conflict among the university’s board of trustees, which offered a near-doubling of his salary during a special late-night meeting May 17 and promised to create and sign off on a new code of conduct.
That meeting came amid rumors that Guskiewicz was growing frustrated with interference from members of the MSU board of trustees and that he was being recruited by other universities. Guskiewicz has not commented on those moves publicly.
