Crafting Effective Campaigns: Narrowing Your Target Audience for Better Results

"Our target audience is everyone."

Every marketer has heard some version of this. 😂

Men and women.

18 to 75.

Every industry.

Every company size.

Every use case.

At that point, the target audience starts sounding more like the population census.

One of the most common reasons campaigns underperform is simple:

The message becomes too broad.

When you're trying to speak to everyone, your copy gets softer, your positioning gets less specific, and your creative loses relevance.

Seth Godin famously said:

"Everyone is not your customer."

And he's right.

The campaigns that usually perform best have a clear picture of who they're speaking to.

What keeps that person up at night?

What problem are they trying to solve?

What language do they actually use?

A few practical reminders:

• Describe your best customer, not every possible customer.
• Segment by behavior and needs, not only demographics.
• If your audience definition fits almost everyone, it's probably too broad.

The irony is that narrowing your audience often helps you reach more of the right people.

What's the broadest target audience description you've ever heard from a client or stakeholder? 😂
