One thing I've learned about marketing:
Everyone has an opinion.
Your CEO has one.
Your sales team has one.
Your cousin who posted three times on Instagram last month has one too. 😂
That's part of what makes marketing interesting.
People interact with ads, emails, websites, and social media every day, so they naturally feel connected to the work.
The challenge is that seeing marketing and doing marketing are two very different things.
Behind a campaign that looks simple, there's usually audience research, positioning, testing, creative development, analytics, reporting, and dozens of small decisions nobody sees.
David Ogilvy once said that consumers don't think the way marketers think. That's why assumptions can be expensive.
A few reminders I come back to:
• Listen to feedback, but look for patterns instead of reacting to every opinion.
• Let data join the conversation before making major decisions.
• Spend more time understanding customers than studying competitors.
Most marketers have heard some version of:
"Why don't we just make it go viral?"
If only it were that easy. 😅
