International Lawyers’ Committee Workshop 3: Africa Insights on Regional Expertise and Cross-Border Networks
🌍 International Lawyers’ Committee Workshop 3: Africa 🌍
Last night, #NYIAC brought together diverse stakeholders to discuss the experiences of #InternationalLawyers practicing in New York, with a particular focus on #Africa. Topics included the #StrategicValue of #RegionalExpertise in #GlobalDisputes; the #NextGen of disputes involving Africa; navigating across Africa's #diverse #jurisdictions -- ever cautionary not to identify a broad, differentiated #continent as monolithic; and building robust #CrossBorder #LegalNetworks.
Interwoven in the dialogue, much was said about #TightKnitCommunities, respectfully navigating the landscape of varied #cultural and #linguistic practice, the thriving #InformalEconomy, and the importance of #timing (particularly at the start of regime changes) and local counsel (e.g., for #HistoricalKnowledge and #RegulatoryMapping).
Candid discussions like these are made possible by able, affable facilitators, each from a #NYIAC #FoundingFirm. Thanks to Alice Gyamfi (DLA Piper), Marco de Sousa (Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer), Afia Kwakwa (Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates), and Nawi Ukabiala (Debevoise & Plimpton). At the helm guiding us through each workshop, thanks also to Co-Chairs Katie Gonzalez (Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP) and Hinda Rabkin (Freshfields). Last but not least, thanks to the delegates who listened, intervened, and celebrated #Africa in the #Diaspora.
