South Africa’s gasoline prices are set to hit a record this month as the government rolls back temporary fuel relief measures amid renewed global oil market pressure driven by Middle East conflict.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy confirmed that 95-octane petrol in Gauteng will rise to R28.06 per liter on June 3, up from R26.63 previously, marking a fresh high for motorists already grappling with persistent inflation.
The Treasury is gradually phasing out subsidies introduced to shield consumers from earlier energy shocks, even as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz tighten global supply.
Inflation has moved to about 4 percent, above the South African Reserve Bank’s 3 percent target, prompting a 25-basis-point rate hike to 7 percent.
Diesel and paraffin prices, however, are set to decline, offering partial relief to transport and households dependent on alternative fuels.
