Tanzania Launches New Salt Processing Plant to Boost Local Manufacturing

Tanzania has opened a new salt processing plant in the Lindi Region, marking a practical step in its push to strengthen local manufacturing and expand value addition in the mining sector.

Developed by the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO), the facility is expected to provide a more stable market for small-scale salt producers who have long faced price swings and inconsistent demand along the country’s southern coastline.

Officials say the plant will directly purchase raw salt from local harvesters and process it for domestic and regional markets, helping to reduce reliance on imports while improving earnings for rural producers.

With a processing capacity of up to three tonnes per hour and projected annual output of 15,000 to 25,000 tonnes, the project is part of a broader government effort to build industrial capacity linked to natural resources.

For policymakers, the focus now shifts to scaling similar investments across other mineral-rich regions and ensuring consistent market access for local producers.
