Understanding Cooling Techniques for Post-Exercise Horse Recovery

Does immediate scraping delay your horse’s recovery?

The physics of cooling is often misunderstood. To regulate a horse effectively after exertion, we must prioritise heat dissipation from the major muscle groups: the hindquarters, thoracic sling, and neck.

Water is a superior conductor. A continuous flow draws heat from the deep tissues to the surface. Immediate scraping is counterproductive; by removing the water too early, you break the conductive bridge and trap heat against the skin.

Nature provides ‘Latherin’, a surfactant protein in sweat that helps moisture reach the skin. We support this biological mechanism by hosing continuously and walking the horse to ensure constant airflow. Only scrape when the coat temperature has equalised with the water.

What is your post-work protocol? Save this to refine your routine.
