Unlocking Horse Movement: The Importance of the Thoracic Sling

The lift your horse displays in movement doesn’t begin in the legs: it begins in the thoracic sling.

As horses lack a collarbone, the trunk is suspended between the shoulder blades by a complex web of muscle and fascia. At the heart of this system is the Serratus Ventralis. When this suspension system is restricted by tissue tension, we observe a heavy forehand and reduced shock absorption.

In practice, grooming is our first opportunity for neuro-muscular regulation. By using ‘Long Lane’ grooming strokes: moving rhythmically from the upper neck and shoulder toward the chest: we are doing more than cleaning a coat. We are encouraging lymphatic drainage and supporting the fascial glide necessary for scapular freedom.

This is the difference between surface-level aesthetics and horse-centred functional excellence.

What colour is your horse? Tell me below, and I will share which specific brush sequence best supports their skin interface and coat type.

Save this for your next grooming session.
