Forests are burning across the US, Canada, Spain, Portugal and France right now. Most people blame the heat, a hot summer, dry trees, a spark. But that's not the real story, and almost nobody talks about what's actually happening underground.
What’s really happening
We pump water out of the ground year after year. Cities drink it, farms drink it, but nobody puts it back.
Instead of letting rain sink into the soil, we send it straight to the drains and rush it out to sea, so the ground never fills back up.
The water table keeps dropping, the roots can't reach it anymore, the trees go thirsty, and the wood dries out from the inside.
The entire forest turns into fuel, just waiting for a spark.
The good news
We can fill the ground back up. Permeable surfaces that let rain sink in instead of running off. Wetlands and ponds that recharge the water table.
Meandering rivers that slow the flow instead of draining it away.
Trees with deep roots that pump moisture back into the soil.
Every landscape we design and every garden we plant is either part of the problem or part of the solution.
