This year marks 25 years since the Police Service of Northern Ireland was established following the Good Friday Agreement. To mark this milestone, the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee has today published a new report on policing and security in Northern Ireland.
The PSNI has played a pivotal role in supporting the transition from the Troubles to peace and stability. Our report recognises this progress while identifying areas where further action is needed.
Key recommendations include:
- Adjusting the PSNI baseline budget, which has fallen in real terms since 2011, and establishing a dedicated UK Government funding pot for legacy investigations.
- Renewed efforts to improve recruitment and representation, with Catholic officer numbers projected to fall and people from ethnic minority and working-class backgrounds remaining underrepresented.
- Greater transparency in how UK Government security funding is allocated.
