Achieving SDG Progress: Integrated National Development Plans for Sustainable Change

SDG progress is uneven: 1️⃣2️⃣ are advancing steadily, 5️⃣ are reversing.

The underlying causes are interconnected:
➡️ Sectoral planning creates missed opportunities
➡️ Fragmented budgets duplicate efforts
➡️ Uncoordinated implementation dilutes impact.

But reversing this requires more than increased funding. It requires structural change. Integrated national development plans where water, energy, agriculture, climate, and employment strategies are designed to reinforce each other.

In practice, this means:
➡️ Hydropower development advances energy access while water infrastructure creates construction jobs.
➡️ Irrigation development increases agricultural yield while improving food security.
➡️ Watershed management advances climate adaptation while supporting livelihoods.

At the High-Level Political Forum on #SustainableDevelopment 2026, #African nations presented evidence of this shift - moving from sectoral plans to integrated frameworks, from insufficient financing to mobilised domestic resources combined with blended finance, and from aspirational commitments to financed, sequenced implementation plans.

This is how fragmentation becomes coordination, and slow progress becomes acceleration.
