Unlocking Development Through Integrated Water Strategies

#Water is typically treated as a sectoral issue - clean water and sanitation (#SDG6). But this framing underutilises water's role as a cross-cutting #development asset.

In reality: hydropower development directly advances energy access (#SDG7); irrigation multiplies agricultural productivity and food security (#SDG2); water infrastructure creates employment in construction, operation, and maintenance (#SDG8, #SDG9); watershed management is foundational to climate adaptation (#SDG13).

Current gaps are substantial: 387 million people in #Africa lack access to safe drinking water; 40 billion hours are lost annually to water collection.

Yet practical solutions exist.

🚰 Hydropower represents 70% of Africa's untapped renewable energy potential.
🚰 Irrigation technology is proven and scalable.
🚰 Water system construction employs millions.

The strategic shift needed: treat water not as one SDG among 17, but as a foundation for multiple development outcomes.

This reframing multiplies development impact while unlocking continent-wide progress on multiple fronts simultaneously.
