Infosys Chairman Nandan Nilekani said that as Artificial Intelligence (AI) grows, companies will need more human skills, not fewer. Even though businesses are increasingly using AI tools for coding and automation, people will still play an important role.
In his message to shareholders in Infosys' FY26 annual report, Nilekani said the technology industry is going through a major transformation. However, he believes IT services companies will become even more important because many businesses will need help to successfully implement and expand AI solutions.
“What still matters is first-principles thinking: learning the underlying concept before reaching for the tool. The demand for human capability grows, not shrinks,” he said.
Referring to a report by the World Economic Forum, Nandan Nilekani said that by 2030, AI and other technological changes could replace about 92 million jobs worldwide. However, these changes are also expected to create around 170 million new jobs. This means there could be a net increase of 78 million jobs overall.
“While we will embrace the best coding tools and improve our productivity, there is much more to do in the software development life cycle,” Nilekani said. “Solutions need to be tested and validated, and architectures designed for speed, scale and resilience.”
