Dr. Hammerman's Grand Rounds: Healthcare Finance & Leadership

Grateful to have welcomed Samuel (“Buddy”) Hammerman as today’s Department of Medicine Grand Rounds speaker at UPMC Central PA. I have had the privilege of knowing Dr. Hammerman for over a decade - not only as a respected colleague, but also as a mentor whose leadership and perspective have deeply influenced me.

His discussion on healthcare finance, stewardship, and physician leadership reinforced an important principle: delivering exceptional, patient-centered care and sustaining healthcare systems financially are not opposing goals - they are deeply interconnected. High-quality care, reduction in hospital-acquired infections, thoughtful resource utilization, and prevention of avoidable readmissions are essential both for patient outcomes and for the long-term health of our organizations.

As healthcare leaders, our responsibility is to continuously align clinical excellence, operational stewardship, and compassionate care while keeping patients at the center of every decision we make.
