Honoring Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Roger Hartl with the Prestigious Ellis Island Medals of Honor
Dr. Joseph Maroon, a 2025 recipient of the Ellis Island Medals of Honor, joins neurosurgical colleague and friend, Roger Hartl, a recipient this year, director of spinal surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and neurosurgical director of the Och Spine Center at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
It is one of the nation’s most prestigious civilian awards recognizing individuals whose work reflects enduring contributions to society, service and the values that define the American experience. It is recognized by both Houses of the US Congress. Since its founding in 1986, the Medal has been awarded to a distinguished group of leaders whose impact extends well beyond their professional fields.
Past honorees include 7 U.S. presidents, several Nobel Laureates and prominent figures across medicine, science, educations, business, public service and the arts including Ronald Reagan, Joe Biden, Muhammad Ali, Lee Iacocca, Dan Rooney and many others chosen for their compassion, generosity and community service.
Born in Germany, Dr. Hartl immigrated to the United States and served part of his neurosurgical residency at the Allegheny Health Network under the directorship of Dr. Maroon. Dr. Hartl initiated a neurosurgical project in Tanzania where he is responsible for training over 23 neurosurgeons that fundamentally changed access to neurosurgical care.
The symbolism of Ellis Island, where over 12, million immigrants first set forth in America, carries personal meaning for both Dr. Hartl and Dr. Maroon whose grandparents immigrated through Ellis Island before settling in the United States. Established in 1986 the Ellis Island Medals of Honor commemorates the legacy of immigration and celebrates individuals who exemplify leadership, service and commitment to the ideals of the United States.
