Congratulations to Pitt Neurosurgery alumnus (Residency '04), recently featured for

Congratulations to Pitt Neurosurgery alumnus Elad Levy, MD MBA (Residency '04), recently featured for achieving a first in neurovascular surgery.

As the L. Nelson Hopkins Chair of Neurological Surgery at University at Buffalo Neurosurgery (UBNS) and head of neurovascular surgery at Atlas Surgery Center, Dr. Levy led a team that performed a carotid stenting procedure in an outpatient ambulatory setting in October 2025, allowing the patient to return home the same day. The advance reflects a broader shift toward minimally invasive, tech-driven neuroendovascular care that reduces system costs and helps preserve hospital capacity for more complex and emergent cases.

In the feature, Dr. Levy credits his training in Pittsburgh as the foundation for this work, pointing to the influence of Dr. L. Dade Lunsford (Residency '80), who brought the Gamma Knife to Pittsburgh, and Dr. Peter Jannetta, who pioneered microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia. He describes Pittsburgh as "an innovation mecca."

We are proud to count Dr. Levy among our alumni and to see the legacy of innovation carried forward.
