Mastering Additional Work Conversations: Training Your Crew for Profit Protection

Ask most painting contractors why their crew gave work away on a job... and they'll tell you the person just didn't care enough.

That's usually not the problem.

Most people in the trades are hardworking and genuinely want to do right by the customer. But when a homeowner asks for something extra on site... that moment can feel like conflict. And when it feels like conflict... the path of least resistance is to just handle it and move on. No conversation. No change order. No charge.

The work gets done. The customer seems happy. And somewhere between the job site and the final invoice... the margin disappears.

Scott Lollar makes a point in Episode 24 of Success Beyond the Brush that reframes this entirely. These aren't difficult conversations. They're just questions that nobody taught your crew how to ask.

Something as simple as... "I'd be happy to take care of that. Let me get you a price real quick." Or... "That's a little outside of what we had planned... would you like me to call the office and get that added on?" Changes everything. No confrontation. No giving work away. Just a calm... professional... conversation.

Think about how HVAC technicians or electricians handle this. They quote additional work without hesitation and without apology. Not because they don't care about the customer... but because they've been trained to treat it as a normal part of the job.

Your crew can do the same. They just need the words.
