Over a decade of planning, construction and financing challenges went into the 54-unit MoTown Square assisted living facility, which is now more than half occupied with a waiting list for some of the units.
The $18.4 million project was the brain child of first-time developer Maurice Townsend, who founded MoTown Square Development and partnered with nonprofit housing development organization, Linc Up.
Construction wrapped on the four-story building in December 2025, and the first tenants moved in just before Christmas, said Linc Up Executive Director LaKiya Jenkins. Developers and community members celebrated the completion of MoTown Square on May 27, after overcoming several hurdles through the years.
The development is designed for seniors ages 55 and older. Amenities include a sauna, salon and private dining area. Support services available to residents are coordinated through partnerships with Area Agency on Aging, PACE, Reliance and Elders Helpers.
All of the units in the project are being rented at rates affordable for households earning at or below 60% of the area median income, and 12 of the apartments are earmarked for individuals 55 and older who are experiencing homelessness.
