Post-Cinco de Mayo: Bev-Alc Sales Decline Continues, Despite Week-Over-Week Gains

Post-Cinco de Mayo momentum gave bev-alc a short-term lift — but year-over-year declines remain entrenched. 📉🍺

In the four weeks ending May 16, total bev-alc dollar sales fell 4.6% to $8.3 billion, with volume down 6.1%, according to NIQ. Every major category posted YoY declines for the third straight report, and beer led losses in the latest period (-5.2% dollars), surrendering its reputation as the most stable segment. Still, week-over-week sales climbed 8%, and pockets of growth emerged in non-alcoholic beer (+5.9%), hard cider (+1%) and spirits-based RTDs (+26.7%).

Prepared cocktails were nearly flat in dollars, while several legacy beer segments saw accelerated declines — even as brands like Busch, Pacifico and Cutwater delivered double-digit gains. 🍹📊
