Understanding and Mastering Seam Sealing in Outdoor Apparel

You've worn Arc'teryx. Patagonia. Salomon. Outdoor Research.

You trust those jackets in the rain because the seams don't leak.

That's not an accident. That's seam sealing — and it's a construction standard, not a premium upgrade.

Here's what the process involves:
Bonding tape is applied to the interior seam line using a heat-and-pressure cycle. The adhesive creates a continuous waterproof barrier across every stitch hole. No gap. No water path.

Key parameters that determine whether it holds:
→ Tape weight matched to fabric laminate (2L / 2.5L / 3L)
→ Temperature window: typically 160–180°C depending on adhesive chemistry
→ Dwell time and roller pressure calibrated per fabric weight
→ Peel test minimum: 3kg/cm for alpine and hardshell applications

Get any of these wrong and the seam passes the factory floor test — then fails on day one in the field.

We produce seam-sealed garments for outdoor and sportswear brands across hardshell, softshell, rain, and trail running categories.
