Understanding Engineering Differences in Apparel Manufacturing

A $50 jacket and a $2000 jacket can look almost the same.
But they are not competing in the same system.
What separates them is not branding —
It’s how much engineering is built into the product.
Different levels of:
• process complexity
• structural reinforcement
• production control
• consistency at scale
These are upstream decisions —
made long before the product reaches the market.
And this is where many supply chains diverge:
some optimize for cost and speed,
others optimize for performance and stability.
Neither is “wrong”.
But they lead to very different outcomes.
For brands, the real question is not:
“How much should this product sell for?”
But:
“What level of product are we actually building?”
Because price is a result.
Structure is the cause.
