It's easy to read that as athlete bravado. But there's a leadership lesson buried in it. The people who consistently outperform aren't chasing external benchmarks. They've internalised a standard higher than anything the market sets for them.

External expectations are a ceiling. Internal ones are an engine.

The most driven people I've come across (founders, creators, operators) all share this trait. They're not measuring themselves against the room. They're measuring against a version of themselves that doesn't exist yet.
